Colemine Presents: The Admirables & Black Market Brass

A night of uptempo soul, funk, afrobeat, and jazz at Hive Mind, brought to you by Colemine Records. Don't miss it!

Doors at 8pm
Music at 9pm
$10-15 suggested

THE ADMIRABLES (Akron)
The Admirables is a funky soul band based out of Akron,Ohio.
Wielding their instruments alone, the raw energy of the Admirables is a force to be reckoned with. Front man Nathan-Paul Davis engages the crowd with his vocals like a baptist preacher in a packed church, encouraging the crowd to get up and dance until they drop. "It's a big soul party and everybody's welcome, so come as you are!
https://theadmirables.bandcamp.com/

BLACK MARKET BRASS (Minneapolis)
"Their live show is the stuff you rave about to your friends the next day. It's precise execution meets raw and freaky free-experimentation, locked tight into an uptempo groove that just won't quit."
http://blackmarketbrass.com/index.html

About Colemine Records:
"Colemine Records was founded in late 2007 with the simple idea of putting out raw, authentic SOUL music on vinyl. Since then we've been lucky enough to grow and work with some very talented artists and bands over the years, and in 2015 we opened up a brick and mortar record store, Plaid Room Records, so that we could continue to expand our little soul label. It's operated primarily by two guys, Terry Cole and Bob Cole, but the strength of the label is quality music produced by our artists."

ABOUT THE EVENT:

The AWARD-WINNING Electric Pressure Cooker Cabaret is wandering to a brand new location in West Hill – Hive Mind – for another month of "ANYTHING GOES" entertainment!

Through humble beginnings in the basement of a Highland Square flower shop, the #EPCooker is an artist driven event that sees over 100 audience members, 20+ performances and 6 non-stop hours of art.

Doors open and registration for performers begins at 7:30 pm. Performances begin between 8:00 - 8:30 pm. Anyone – from beginner to pro – may sign up for a 12-minute slot. Performers may pre-register atepcooker.com.

An emcee, house drum kit, keyboard, lighting and sound system (with operators) are provided. This month's emcee: Performer, Improviser & Mother: Jennifer Betz

ALL varieties of acts are encouraged to perform. Previous acts have included: monologues, acoustic musicians, comedians, feats of strength, play readings, experimental art, dancers, burlesqu, scenes from plays, improvisation, devised work, full rock bands and performance artists. But the sky is the limit; no art is too taboo for the #EPCooker!

ALL levels – from beginner to the most experienced – are encouraged to perform. Those under 18 are permitted to attend (and perform!) with adult supervision.

The #EPCooker is not just an Open Mic. It is an open and welcoming community of artists. It is also a great networking event, a great place to improve stage presence and a great place to develop as an artist. Storyteller Kyle Jozsa, Comedian Sarah Jones, Just Go With It Improv Comedy Troupe, Copper Pennies and many other acts premiered at the #EPCooker.

There will be wine, water and pizza available at Hive Mind. All other outside food and beverages are also permitted.

ABOUT THE EMCEE:

Jennifer Betz performs improv with Point of No Return Improv in Cuyahoga Falls along with the River Side Valley Players in Chagrin Falls. She choreographs, and occasionally performs, for local theatre productions, is working with Gum-Dip Theatre on their current show called 'Namaste What?', and likes to take a smidge of credit in the upbringing of her amazing daughter, McCartney. In her "spare" time, she loves open mics and is always looking for anyone willing to play an instrument while she makes up songs.

PALLAS (Atlanta)
"Pallas, a new four piece group from Atlanta, GA, plays music that sprawls out of the same scene that brought us bands like Warehouse and Red Sea. Their strange arrangements are complex yet rely on repetition, touching base with each member’s own artistic understandings of rhythm, noise, atmosphere – and how all of these things correlate together to bring a concrete sound unique and not easily comparable to one genre or band."

Contra // Supercorrupter // Matter of Planets

Matter of Planets is bringing their gear all the way from Columbus to play their intense rock music for you. It's pretty epic, like Krull meets the Black Hole or maybe Swiss Family Robinson in space.

Contra is coming all the way from Cleveland by way of parts of Akron to get down and dirty with riffs that would make Leslie West weep and grooves that would trip up James Brown.

supercorrupter is crawling out of the basement to once again tempt fate and probably explode their amps with a high octane blast of rock and roll.

You should come check it out. Starts at 8PM. We'll keep it moving along so that everyone gets plenty of beauty rest afterwards.

Velour, Valore!

Kent Books to Prisoners (KB2P) is an autonomous affinity group that supports prisoners primarily through the provision of free books and other material upon request. KB2P also functions as a media intermediary of sorts; receiving, copying, and redistributing prisoners’ works – such as political essays, biographical writings, and art compilations – among penal institutions all over the United States. By its very nature, the group extends beyond mere charity, since the prison industrial complex perpetuates cycles of class domination, racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination. Therefore, our acts of solidarity and support belong to the realm of resistance to oppression.

Gadabout Film Fest

The annual Gadabout Film Festival is an internationally-touring short film program with a unique style and energy. A Gadabout screening is an experience accessible to everyone, from film aficionados to film novices, with a selection of high-quality, well-paced films diverse in genre, medium, and content. The program will include documentaries, animations, narratives, and just plain fun films. You’ll leave inspired and curious, having laughed, pondered, and possibly teared up.

Since its beginning, in 2002, The Gadabout had the idea of creating a film festival that operates more like a DIY punk band, an alternative to the money-focused, commercial film festivals. With a van, projector, screen, and speakers, the founders took a program of independent shorts films out on the road, screening in basements, art houses, music venues, collective spaces, warehouses, parking lots, and more. Every year since, the festival has grown and built connections globally, while continuing to create engaging and entertaining film programs to share with new audiences.

“We have been fortunate enough to receive and share incredible short films from all around the world, screening them in 45 states, 15 different countries and over 100 cities during the past 14 years. Over that time we’ve seen filmmaking and the way in which we watch films change and progress. We have gone from receiving VHS submissions in the mail to transferring digital files from filmmakers online that live thousands of miles away. From a time when YouTube didn’t exist to a world where people can watch anything they want at the click of a button. But the essence of the Gadabout hasn’t changed. Things have become even more exciting, especially now that filmmaking has become more accessible. We want to show that film making can be fun, and amazing content can come out of low-to-no budgets.

Hive Mind is hosting another drone music for meditation show. Bring your blankets, sleeping bags, yoga mats, get comfy! This is a show where you're encouraged to lay down and drift away. We have conveniently scheduled it so you can take a break from loud explosions, awkward political conversations with family, and patriotism. We will have a grill available for all of your non-patriotic non-meat cooking needs. Light refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring something to share!

Literals (Washington, DC)

Damien Jurado
http://damienjurado.com/

"Urban folk singer/songwriter Damien Jurado quietly built up one of the strongest catalogs on the indie scene, earning high critical praise yet somehow never quite getting his proper due... Many of Jurado's best songs spun concise, literate tales of quiet, everyday despair, which often earned him comparisons to short story writer Raymond Carver… And with detours into pop, roots rock, full-fledged electric indie rock, psychedelia, and even found-sound experiments, Jurado ensured that his body of work was impossible to accurately pin down."
